April 5, 2024Cedar Sage (Salvia roemeriana)
In a recent blog post, we told you about the Ashe Juniper tree. It’s a tree that’s common in the Austin and central Texas area. In the post, we mentioned cedar sage, a plant associated with Ashe Juniper. In today’s post, we fill you in on the wonderful cedar sage plant.
Cedar sage (Salvia roemeriana) is a small perennial in the same family as mint. The “cedar” in its name comes from one of the common names for Ashe Juniper, a plant it is closely associated with. It can get between 12 and 24 inches tall and just as wide, and is native to Texas and Mexico. You can find it growing in places like the Austin area.
Cedar sage grows in the shade and decomposing foliage of junipers (a notable example is Ashe Juniper). It can grow in rocky areas, does better in soil that drains well, and is a heat-tolerant plant with low water requirements. Although it has adapted to grow under junipers, it doesn’t grow well in places where large leaves fall, as the seedlings of the plant aren’t able to grow through the leaves.
The flowers of cedar sage are red and tube-shaped. They are around one to one and a half inches in length, and they bloom during the spring and summer. The flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The fruit produced by the plant are called nutlets.
The leaves of cedar sage are round, hairy, scalloped, and around one to two inches across.
Cedar sage is a great plant to consider for your landscape. It is low maintenance, does well in the shade, has low water needs, and is hardy to zones seven through eleven.
