There’s Webs on My Tree Bark! – Barklice and Why You Shouldn’t Worry About Them
November 8, 2024Mushroom Monday: Admirable Bolete (Aureoboletus mirabilis)
Happy Mushroom Monday! Today’s Mushroom Monday mushroom is the admirable bolete (Aureoboletus mirabilis). It’s a bolete mushroom. One bolete mushroom we looked at before was Frost’s Bolete. In today’s post, learn about the admirable bolete.
What Are Some Other Names For The Admirable Bolete Mushroom?
Like other mushrooms, the admirable bolete has more than one scientific name that has changed over time. It is also known as Xerocomus mirabilis, Boletellus mirabilis, and Boletus mirabilis.
Where Can Admirable Bolete Mushrooms Be Found?
In North America, admirable bolete mushrooms can be found in the Pacific Northwest. They grow on dead logs, on old stumps, or near old stumps of conifers, particularly hemlock (this hemlock refers to a tree in the genus Tsuga, of which there are eight to ten species, rather than the hemlock plant). The mushrooms will either be by themselves, spaced around with others, or in groups. Their mycelium is yellow.
Although admirable boletes grow from dead wood, they are considered mycorrhizal mushrooms because of their symbiotic relationship with hemlock trees.
What Do Admirable Bolete Caps Look Like?
The caps are around 3 to 6 inches across. They are convex in shape and have a dry felty or grainy feel. As they age, they develop scales. The color is dark and is a mix of purple, red, and brown in tone. The edges of the caps hang down and the part that hangs down has no pores on it.
The Pore Surface of Admirable Boletes
Admirable boletes don’t have gills. Instead, they have a surface of pores. The surface is yellow in color and becomes tinted with a brownish-green hue as it ages. The tubes on the pore surface go about ¾ of an inch into the cap.
Admirable Bolete Stems
The stems of admirable boletes range in height from 2.75 to around 4 inches tall. They are shaped like a club, getting wider toward the base. Where the stem meets the cap it is yellow in color, but below that it is dark in color like the cap with streaks that are paler on the surface. Part of the stem can be netted.
