August 7, 2024Mushroom Monday: Fringed Sawgill Mushroom (Lentinus crinitus)
Today’s Mushroom Monday mushroom is the fringed sawgill mushroom (Lentinus crinitus). Learn about this interesting mushroom in today’s TrueTreeTalk blog post.
The Basics
Fringed sawgill mushrooms are saprophytic mushrooms that grow on dead trees and limbs. They are distinctively fuzzy in appearance and this can make them quite noticeable. They can be found in different places, such as Texas and Brazil. Although they are polypore mushrooms, they have gills.
The Caps
Their caps are a light shade of brown, but can be lighter or darker depending on the mushroom. They have depressed centers and can either have flat caps or caps that are cupped over. They look a bit like the horn of a trumpet. The center of the caps can be a different shade than the rest of the mushroom and the edges can be lighter in color. The caps can overlap each other as they grow.
The Gills
Their gills are thin, whitish, and packed together.
The Stems
Their stems are bumpy and fuzzy.
