May 28, 2025Mushroom Monday: Lilac Fibrecap (Inocybe lilacina)
Overview
With its subtle hues and delicate structure, the Lilac Fibrecap (Inocybe lilacina) is a small but memorable mushroom that can be found in parts of the eastern United States. It gets its common name from the fine fibers that radiate from the center of its cap and its characteristic lilac coloration.
Habitat and Growth
This mycorrhizal mushroom grows with both hardwoods and conifers and can appear either alone or in groups.
Cap Characteristics
The cap starts off convex and gradually flattens with age, often keeping a noticeable bump in the center. It begins with a sticky texture that dries over time, and its coloration can shift from purple to lilac to brown as it matures. A distinctive purple center often remains visible through much of its development. As the cap ages, it may split, adding to its textured appearance. The cap of the Lilac Fibrecap ranges from one to three centimeters across.
Gills
Its gills are crowded together and start off tan, darkening with age. They often have whitish edges and may be covered with a veil when the mushroom is young. The gills are attached to the stem, though they can sometimes appear short.
Stem Characteristics
The stem itself is thin—just two to four millimeters wide—and stands two to four centimeters tall. It darkens from a whitish shade at the top to a purple color near the base, which can be swollen. As the mushroom ages, the stem becomes hollow.
Identification Notes
Some mushrooms can be mistaken for Inocybe lilacina, as similar species exist. But the combination of lilac coloring, fibrous cap, and changing gill and stem characteristics make this a distinctive find for those paying close attention during their woodland walks.
