Bald Cypresses
Bald Cypresses (Taxodium distichum) are deciduous cone-bearing trees that can grow near lakes and rivers, in swamps, and in places where flooding occurs. They can grow to be large trees, and reach heights over one hundred feet with diameters growing to eight feet. They have straight trunks and numerous branches. Their bark is reddish/brown to silver in color and can form grooves as the tree ages. Depending on where they are, they can develop “knees”. The knees are growths from the roots that form when the trees grow in swaps. During the fall, their foliage can develop a copper color.
