May 15, 2024Mushroom Monday: Amanita amerirubescens
It’s Mushroom Monday again and today’s mushroom is Amanita amerirubescens. You might think this mushroom is a little shy because of the way it blushes. It’s an interesting mushroom and our focus today.
What Does Amanita amerirubescens Look Like?
This mushroom has a convex cap with a brownish color and warts. The warts are what remains of the mushroom’s universal veil. They start out yellow in color and then become tanner as time goes on. The cap is generally dry but can be a little sticky.
Sizes can vary, but the cap can be around 1.5 to 6 inches in diameter and the stem can be 2 to 7 inches tall with a diameter of 0.4 to 1.2 inches. The stem can have a noticeable ring.
The mushroom’s gills are white as is its interior.
The base of the mushroom is bulb-like, but doesn’t have a distinct sac, like there would be with some other types of mushrooms.
Why Do Amanita amerirubescens Mushrooms Blush?
Although you might think Amanita amerirubescens blush because they’re shy, the real reason is that their color changes when they are bruised or cut. The mushroom’s cap, stem, gills, and interior can all change to a pinkish reddish color when damaged. This is where the common name of Blusher comes from.
Where are Amanita amerirubescens Mushrooms located?
Amanita amerirubescens mushrooms can be found alone or in groups in the eastern part of North America. They associate with trees, in particular oak. They can also be found around conifers.
What kind of Mushrooms are Amanita amerirubescens?
They are mycorrhizal mushrooms. They have a symbiotic relationship with trees.
