March 20, 2024Mushroom Monday: Grey Knight (Tricholoma terreum)
Today’s Mushroom Monday mushroom is the Grey Knight (Tricholoma terreum).
Where can Grey Knights be Found?
Grey knights (also called Grey ghosts) can be found in Europe, Australia, and possibly North America. They generally grow in groups and can be found in forests with coniferous trees. In some areas, they can be quite common.
How Big are Grey Knights?
Grey knights can get to be around 2.4 inches tall with caps that at maturity can be around 1 to 4 inches across.
What do Grey Knights Look Like?
Grey knights are grayish/brownish/white in color.
They have fibrous caps that start with a cone shape but become flatter as they mature. The caps can have a bump in the center and fibers that radiate out from the middle. As the caps get older, they can split, showing the white inside.
The gills start out white but can turn gray with a yellow tinge as the mushroom ages. They are wide and packed together and there’s a notch attaching them to the stem.
The stem of the mushroom is white, smooth, and cylindrical. It has no ring around it, and it can be hollow.
They can look similar to other Tricholomas mushrooms.
Other Information about Grey Knights
Grey knights aren’t edible. It used to be thought they were, but now they are known to be unsafe. They don’t have a strong scent and are mycorrhizal with trees such as pines and other conifers.
