Formosan Subterranean Termites (Coptotermes formosanus)
September 27, 2024Mushroom Monday: Pycnoporus cinnabarinus
October 7, 2024Mushroom Monday: Hexagonia hydnoides
Today’s Mushroom Monday mushroom is Hexagonia hydnoides. It’s a polypore mushroom that can be found in tropical regions. We’ve featured other polypore mushrooms before including resinous polypore, beefsteak mushroom, and dryad’s saddle.
Hexagonia hydnoides mushrooms have a thin dark-colored cap that has numerous dark-colored hairs that can be lost in some instances as the mushroom ages. The cap is two to four inches across and around 1.5 to 2.75 inches in thickness with a semicircle shape that’s convex.
They can be found in groups or alone growing on dead wood of a variety of trees, with the exception of conifers. They can be found at a variety of times of year in the southern states of the U.S. and as far south as South America. They are saprophytic mushrooms that cause white rot.
The surface of the pores is dark in color and the interior flesh has a brown, rusty color. The mushroom has no stem.
