January 19, 2024New Year’s Resolutions: Five Tips for Staying Motivated
In a recent post, we wrote about New Year’s resolutions for your landscape and trees. We know sometimes New Year’s resolutions can be hard to stick to, so we thought we’d give you five tips to help you stay motivated.
Tip #1: Make a plan
Writing down the basics of what you want to do for your trees and landscape can help you organize your thoughts and put your ideas in a lasting form. You could put this in an electronic form, or better yet, put it on something tangible like paper or a whiteboard and put it in a place where you could see it regularly. This could be at a desk or even with a magnet on a refrigerator.
One idea would be to write out what you want to accomplish on a calendar. This not only helps you organize your thoughts, but also helps you put a timeline to things. Check out our Tree Services By The Season page for ideas on things you might want to add to your calendar that a professional could help you with.
Tip #2: Set reminders
Despite our best intentions, sometimes we get preoccupied with other things or we just forget to keep up with our resolutions. This is where reminders can help. You can have written reminders like on sticky notes or on a calendar and you can also have electronic ones on your phone. Reminders can be great in helping you to stay motivated. A colorful little piece of paper or a little sound coming from your phone can sometimes be just what you need.
Tip #3: Do simple things
Not every resolution or goal has to be big. You can often do small things and they can make a difference. Doing something as simple as properly applying mulch around your trees can help you to keep going. As you accomplish little things, they can motivate you to do more.
Tip #4: Take that first step
You’ve probably heard the expression – the hardest step is the first one. To help you stay motivated, take that first step. Sometimes just getting things started can be a big help in motivating you to do more.
A great first step in terms of taking care of your trees is to have an arborist consultation. Certified arborists are trained professionals who can help you identify issues with your trees and provide recommendations for their care. By starting with an arborist, you can start with good information. This can be a great first step.
Tip #5: Do things is phases
When thinking about taking care of your trees and landscape, it can help to keep in mind that you don’t have to do everything at once. While certain things a professional might identify would need to be taken care of sooner rather than later, other things could be done over time. You can talk to a professional, make a plan, and then have the work done in phases. This can help you to do things when they are more convenient for you and as time and budget allows. Knowing you can space things out can help you stay motivated.
New Year’s resolutions are great. They can help us to take steps toward improving things in our lives. Sometimes though, we need a little help staying motivated. Hopefully these five tips have helped you do just that.
